Navel Gazing 101

I’m not sure why more people aren’t talking about the movie Haywire. It’s fucking great. It has an incredibly strong, well-written female lead (played by Gina Carano). It’s as good and possibly better than all of the Bourne movies. And yet it seems to hardly be playing anywhere with almost zero promotion.

If you’re wondering why there aren’t many strong female characters in movies (and a lot of you are), there’s absolutely one in here and I wouldn’t be remiss in saying that it’s one of the most watchable characters since Gosling in Drive. It’s also one of the better Soderbergh movies I’ve seen, too. And David Holmes did the music (he also did the Oceans 11, 12, 13 soundtracks). Michael Fassbinder is in it, too. So is Antonio Banderas. So go and see it this weekend.

I was worried by the negative reviews, but I took a chance on it anyway. Pleasantly surprised. Kind of reminded me of a female Burn Notice… or better yet, a new age La Femme Nikita.
